What Is the SAT and Why Does Your Score Matter So Much?
The SAT is a standardized college admissions test used by the vast majority of four-year universities across the United States. It measures reading comprehension, writing and language skills, and math ability. But here is what most families do not realize: your score is not a measure of intelligence. It is a measure of how well a student has learned to take this specific test. That is exactly why preparation works.
The digital SAT has two main sections. The first is Reading and Writing, scored between 200 and 800 points. The second is Math, also scored between 200 and 800 points, for a combined total of 1600. Most competitive colleges look for scores above 1300, and highly selective schools often expect 1400 or higher. Every 30 to 50 point gain opens new doors, new scholarship opportunities, and a wider range of college options.
What David teaches students to understand is that the SAT is not testing what they know. It is testing how they handle questions designed to mislead, rush, and confuse. There are patterns to every section, strategies for every question type, and shortcuts that raise scores without requiring students to learn new material from scratch. That is the foundation of every SAT prep session at David Greenhouse Tutoring.

SAT Test Breakdown:
The digital SAT has two main scored sections. Understanding what each one tests, and how to approach it strategically, is exactly where most unprepared students lose unnecessary points.
Reading and Writing
This section combines two skills into one adaptive module. It tests reading comprehension across fiction, history, social studies, and science, as well as sentence structure, grammar conventions, and rhetorical choices. David teaches students to read strategically, identify what each question is actually testing, and eliminate wrong answers systematically rather than guessing.
Writing and Language
Four passages with grammar, punctuation, and style questions. The SAT tests standard English conventions, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. The rules repeat across every test. David works through every high-frequency grammar rule until spotting the correct answer becomes instinctive, not effortful.
Math SAT Prep
Algebra, problem-solving, data analysis, and advanced math topics. Calculator allowed for some modules, not others. David focuses sessions on the concepts that appear most frequently: linear equations, systems, functions, and data interpretation. Students learn which questions to prioritize, which to skip, and how to manage time across both math modules without panic
How I Help
With over 20 years of tutoring and admissions experience, I provide customized one-on-one sessions—either in person or via Zoom—designed to set you apart. Together, we’ll:
01
David analyzes every practice test answer to find the patterns in what a child gets wrong. It is never random. There is always a pattern, and fixing the pattern fixes the score.
02
Each question type on the SAT has a reliable approach. David teaches the system for every type so children approach every question methodically, not by feel or by guessing.
03
Only the grammar rules and math concepts that actually appear on the SAT are covered. No time is wasted on low-frequency material. Every session targets what is worth the most points.
04
Most students do not run out of knowledge on the SAT. They run out of time. David trains children to pace every section, make smart decisions about which questions to answer first, and finish without leaving blanks.
05
Real College Board practice materials and targeted homework assignments keep the work going between sessions. Strategies are reinforced, not forgotten, before the next meeting.
06
Regular practice tests track score movement week by week. David adjusts the strategy based on what is actually working for each child, not on a fixed schedule. Progress is always visible.
