What Is the SAT (And Why It Matters)
The SAT is a standardized test used by most U.S. colleges for admissions decisions. It measures reading, writing, and math skills—not intelligence, but your ability to handle college-level work. Your SAT score is one of the few parts of your application you can still improve senior year.
The test has two main sections: Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (400-800 points) and Math (400-800 points), for a total of 1600 points. Most competitive colleges look for scores above 1300, while highly selective schools expect 1450+. But every 50-point increase opens more doors and scholarship opportunities.
Here’s what students don’t realize: the SAT isn’t just testing what you know—it’s testing how you take tests. There are patterns, strategies, and shortcuts that can raise your score significantly without learning new content. That’s exactly what I teach. We’ll work smarter, not just harder.

SAT Test Breakdown:
With over 20 years of tutoring and admissions experience, I provide customized one-on-one sessions—either in person or via Zoom—designed to set you apart. Together, we’ll:
Reading
5 passages covering literature, history, social studies, and science. Questions test comprehension, evidence-based reasoning, and vocabulary in context. Strategy: Learn to find answers directly in the passage without overthinking. I’ll teach you how to identify question types and eliminate wrong answers systematically.
Writing & Language
4 passages with grammar, punctuation, and style questions. Tests standard English conventions, sentence structure, and rhetorical skills. Strategy: Master the grammar rules tested repeatedly—comma usage, verb agreement, pronouns. Most students improve fastest here because the rules are learnable and predictable.
Math SAT Prep
Algebra, problem-solving, data analysis, and advanced math topics. Calculator allowed for some sections, not others. Strategy: Focus on high-frequency concepts like linear equations, systems, and functions. Learn shortcuts and which questions to skip and return to. Time management is crucial here.

FAQs

When should I start SAT prep?
3-4 months before your test date is ideal—enough time to improve without overwhelming your regular schoolwork.
How many times should I take the SAT?
Most students take it 2-3 times. Colleges superscore (take your best section scores), so multiple attempts usually help.

Not like the old SAT. Now it’s vocabulary in context—I’ll teach you strategies for figuring out words from passages.
Should I take the SAT or ACT?
Take a practice test of each—some students naturally do better on one. I’ll help you decide which fits your strengths.
